In the freshman year of high school, I had a professor named Al Sylvia. He was my English professor who was funny and entertaining and in a sense lassoed me to his class every day (because it was interesting). One of his hobbies included making website. Instead of handing in our essay on hardcopy, we had to create a website and upload it there. The look and feel of the website was also part of the grade. He taught us the basics of HTML and how to use Yahoo! Geocities. I believe the website is still up: click here to view my first website. Ever since his class I have been fascinated with the web and how webmasters made such masterful works of art. I soon began to consider web-mastering as my future career, until my dad stated:

What the heck are you doing? Your websites? Do you plan to do that for the rest of your life? Do you think you'll survive? It's pointless, you're just wasting your life into something you will never succeed at.

After he told me that, I wanted to prove him wrong really bad. I began learning advanced HTML, PhotoShop, Flash and Fireworks. I soon became pretty good at making websites. It was then that I realized that I will not survive by being a webmaster. So I began working just for fun and focused more on engineering (my primary choice of study before Al Sylvia persuaded me). Then a year later I joined my school's Student Council group. I was voted Communications Vice President (a role that never existed before) because I was the one who created all the flyers and tickets from scratch and they saw no reason of me having no "unique role" in the group. I then sent out a proposal to bring our advertising to the web. When the proposal was accepted, I designed a website for the Student Council group to advertise their events and a friendly community for their members (community was powered by phpBB). I was soon recognized by many other groups that needed support, including 7ARTS, EHJBasketeers, DUE Awards, and many others. Ever since, I have done much web work because I choose to. Not because of a future career that may lie before me, not because I get paid, but because it became a hobby of mine. I'm glad I had that talk with my dad, without him making that speech I wouldn't be doing what I love doing: MAKING WEBSITES.
